Corporate Executives
Chief Executive Officer - Sean O'Leary Sean O’Leary, a Genscape cofounder, was named CEO in 2003 after being previously responsible for sales, marketing, business development and logistics. In 2003, Sean was recognized along with his business partner, Sterling Lapinski, as an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the company's early success. Prior to founding Genscape, Mr. O’Leary was employed by APB Energy in Louisville, Kentucky where he originated and developed new business concepts in the energy markets and managed APB’s venture capital fund, specializing in energy and tech-related startups. Mr. O’Leary joined APB from Columbia Energy Services Corporation, where he, along with Mr. Lapinski, started the company’s power trading division and ran its short-term business throughout the U.S. Mr. O’Leary is a University of Michigan graduate with a BA degree in finance and economics and a University of Louisville graduate with an MBA in Entrepreneurship.
President, Chief Development Officer - Sterling Lapinski Sterling Lapinski is a Genscape cofounder responsible for technology,
research and development, and new markets. Prior to founding Genscape,
Mr. Lapinski was the Managing Director of Trading for Columbia Energy
Services Corporation in Houston, TX, where he managed a trading group
responsible for the firm’s proprietary positions in electricity,
oil, natural gas, weather derivatives and related structured deals.
Mr. Lapinski joined Columbia from Mirant Inc. where he co-managed
a trading book of energy commodities and weather derivatives. Mr.
Lapinski also has worked for TXU Energy Services as a Director of
Trading. Previously, Mr. Lapinski worked for BNP Paribas (formerly
FFTW) in New York where he managed portfolios of mortgage-backed securities,
primarily for Fortune 500 pension funds and foreign central banks.
Mr. Lapinski is a graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the
University of Pennsylvania, where he received a BS in Finance. Mr.
Lapinski is a US patent holder and a former Ernst & Young Entrepreneur
of the Year. Mr. Lapinski also serves on the board of directors of
the Louisville Science Center.
President, EnvaPower, Inc./ Exec. VP, Genscape, Inc. - Gustav Beerel Gustav Beerel has been in the forefront of emerging and evolving energy trading markets, defining, applying and developing strategies for new business development. As a founder of EnvaPower Inc., Dr. Beerel developed a premier real-time market intelligence business to serve U.S.-based power marketers. Previously, he was a co-founder of New Energy Ventures, Inc., an energy marketing company, where he built and managed a world-class trading operation through which the first deregulated electricity in the United States was delivered and sold. In 1999, New Energy Ventures was sold to AES, Inc. for $90+ Million, and Dr. Beerel became the Corporate Senior Vice President of Supply & Trading for AES. Prior to retail power market deregulation, Dr. Beerel developed the Retail Electricity Business and Risk Management Strategy for Enron Capital & Trade. Dr. Beerel hired and managed a team of modeling professionals at Dow Chemical, earning numerous performance awards including the optimization of nearly 2,000 MW of co-generation facilities in Freeport, Texas. Dr. Beerel earned an M.B.A. from Harvard University, with concentrations on financial markets and corporate strategic risk management. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with an emphasis in fundamental modeling and statistics.
Senior V.P., Natural Gas - Todd L. Phillips Todd L. Phillips has overall responsibility for Genscape’s global natural gas business. Prior to his natural gas responsibilities, Mr. Phillips was the Chief Financial Officer for Genscape. Prior to joining Genscape, Mr. Phillips was the head of finance for Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation, a $250 million manufacturer of metal siding and roofing for the construction industry. Mr. Phillips was responsible for overall management of the accounting and finance departments, as well as information technology, human resources and credit. Mr. Phillips also spent five years with Arthur Andersen, prior to joining Metal Sales. Mr. Phillips is a CPA and graduated from the University of Kentucky, with degrees in Accounting and Finance. Mr. Phillips is also on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement. Senior V.P., Genscape Data Resources - Abudi Zein Abudi Zein leads the effort to create new information products based on the Genscape data for our clients. Prior to joining Genscape, Mr. Zein worked in the energy information industry in Tokyo, Singapore, London, Houston and New York. During his career, Mr. Zein held management positions in editorial, product development, marketing, sales and general management. His most recent position was CEO for Argus Media, Inc. Mr. Zein has a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Hanover in Germany, and a master’s in journalism from the University of Missouri – Columbia.
V.P., Government Services/Research & Development - Deirdre Alphenaar, Ph.D. Deirdre Alphenaar is responsible for research and development within the Government Services group at Genscape. Dr. Alphenaar joined Genscape in 2002, having previously worked as the Director of Information Technology for Telemics, Inc., a utility infrastructure monitoring company. Prior to moving to the United States in 2000, Dr. Alphenaar completed two years of post-doctoral research at the University of Cambridge, England where she specialized in hardware and software development for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications in human and equine medicine. Dr. Alphenaar has a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Surrey, England and has over 15 peer-reviewed scientific publications. Dr. Alphenaar received her Masters in Medical Radiation Physics from Charing Cross Medical School/Brunel University, England and worked for five years as a medical physicist prior to pursuing her Ph.D. Her current focus at Genscape includes improved transmission line power analytics and the development of new methodologies related to the acquisition, processing and display of energy information. Dr. Alphenaar has contributed to three recent patent filings for Genscape and provides technical management for ongoing federal research and development contracts.
V.P., Sales & Marketing - Michael McAuliffe Michael McAuliffe joined Genscape in January 2002 from Giga Information Group, where he ran the New York & Chicago Regional Sales Offices. Prior to Giga, Mr. McAuliffe worked as a Sales Director for Reuters America, the financial market’s leading provider of real time news and data, and Logical Information Machines (LIM), the leader in historical energy market data and analytics. Mr. McAuliffe also has sales and sales management experience with Bridge Information Systems/EJV Partners and YesTrader. Previously, Mr. McAuliffe was an institutional sales representative for CIBC Oppenheimer in New York City, focusing on taxable fixed income and mortgage backed derivatives securities. Mr. McAuliffe has a BA in Management from Manhattanville College and an MBA from The University of Notre Dame. V.P., Information Technology - Stephen Akers Stephen Akers is responsible for Genscape’s overall information
technology (IT) strategy and solutions delivery. Prior to joining
Genscape, Mr. Akers worked as the Director of Product Development
for SHPS, where he managed the design and development of their integrated
online customer portal. His prior work experience includes seven years
with General Electric, where he received certification as a Six Sigma
Black Belt. While at GE, Mr. Akers managed the team responsible for
launching GE's business-to-business web application that generated
over $2B in revenue the first year. Mr. Akers is a University of Louisville
graduate with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the J.B.
Speed School of Engineering and an MBA in Entrepreneurship.
V.P., Finance - Sean Rice Sean Rice is responsible for managing the global finance, treasury, tax, human resource, and administrative functions of the company. Mr. Rice’s work experience includes accounting, risk management, auditing, and cost accounting in the energy, aluminum, and chemical industries. Mr. Rice is a certified public accountant in Kentucky and a member of the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants. Mr. Rice has a B.A. in Business Administration from Alma College and an MBA in Entrepreneurship from The University of Louisville. Mr. Rice is an active member in the local Junior Achievement chapter and the Leadership Louisville Center.
Managing Director, Genscape North America - Jill Sampson Jill Sampson is responsible for the collection, processing and delivery
of Genscape's real time data. Mrs. Sampson joined Genscape in June
2001 from WhipMix Corporation, where she ran the manufacturing facility's
Quality Control Lab and was the ISO 9000 Lead Quality Auditor. Her
prior work experience includes automotive manufacturing and assembly,
newspaper production, and two startups in the restaurant and casino
industries. Mrs. Sampson has a B.S. in Biochemistry from Purdue University
and an MBA in Entrepreneurship from The University of Louisville.
Mrs. Sampson is an active member of the University of Louisville's
College of Business Board of Alumni and works throughout the year
as a volunteer at Actors Theatre of Louisville. Managing Director, Genscape International - Christian Essers Christian Essers is responsible for the management and operation
of Genscape’s European business. Mr. Essers brings to the firm
over twelve years experience as consultant and manager in the European
energy sector. Prior to joining Genscape, Mr. Essers served as Director
of Strategy, Regulatory & Legal affairs at Dutch utility NV Nuon
in Amsterdam. He joined Nuon through its acquisition of Reliant Energy
Europe and its operations in the Netherlands. Reliant started in Europe
with an acquisition of 3500MW of generation capacity in the Netherlands
and developed an asset-backed commodity trading business around those.
While at Reliant, Mr. Essers held a senior management position and
was at various times responsible for European Strategy & Planning,
Regulatory Affairs, Business Development, and Corporate Services (HR,
IT, Communication) of the European operations for Reliant Energy (RRI).
Previously, Mr. Essers worked for consulting firm Arthur D. Little
in London/UK, where he advised international clients on strategic,
organizational and commercial matters, with a focus on deregulating
markets and trading operations. Mr. Essers studied economics and business
administration, graduating with a Bachelors diploma in economics at
Ruhr-University-Bochum (1990) and a Masters diploma in business administration
at Liebig-University-Giessen (1993), both in Germany. |
