Weekly Coal Transport Report Methodology (US)

Genscape uses way bill data supplied by shippers, and the lock shipment data of the US Army Corps of Engineers to compile the Weekly Coal Transport Report. All shipments that use more than one railroad, and most single railroad shipments are included in the rail portion of this report. All shipments that pass a lock on the Allegheny, Arkansas, Cumberland, Green, Illinois, Kanawha, Mississippi, Monongahela, Ohio and Tennessee rivers are included in this report. The assignment of shipments to coal basins and census regions is based on a mapping of the pools between locks to basins and regions. A listing of coal terminals and coal-fired power plants by lock is available in the data file that is distributed with this report. The barge data only identifies either the origin or destination of a shipment quantity, while the rail data identifies both origin and destination. The tables breaking down deliveries by basin and region are therefore based only on the rail data.

The report does not include any coal deliveries by truck or conveyor belt, and it also excludes barge shipments on stretches of navigable rivers that do not have locks.

The data shows shipments by origin and destination starting on Saturday and ending on Friday. Reported shipments may be anywhere between the source and the destination.

The data summarized in this report is also available as a weekly data feed file in various formats. The data file provides detailed information on the quantity and quality of coal shipped by mine and delivered by power plant and other facilities.
