Weekly Coal Stock Pile Change Report (US)

Weekly Coal Stock Pile Change Report SampleReport Description

Changes in coal stock piles at power plants are among the most powerful indicators of coming price swings in the entire utility fuel complex. The level of coal reserves influences much more than just the use and pricing of coal. In the summer of 2005, for example, coal shortages contributed to driving natural gas prices to all-time high. In the spring of 2006, concern over a repeat of the summer 2005 shortfall prompted plant operators to burn gas rather than coal to conserve fuel for the summer.

In response to client interest, Genscape has used its coal consumption and coal deliveries data to create a report focused on this important energy indicator. The Genscape approach is based on the fact that changes in stockpiles must equal the amount of coal delivered minus the amount of coal burned. For the delivery data, Genscape uses its Weekly Coal Transport Report. For the consumption figures, Genscape uses its Weekly Coal Burn Report, which contains observed burns at plants representing more than half the coal-fired capacity in the country, as well as extrapolated regional figures for the entire coal fleet. The stockpile calculation uses the December 2004 regional stockpile numbers reported by the Energy Information Administration as its starting point.

The report is published on a Monday and contains data up to the previous Friday.

The result of the Genscape calculation shows clear trends in coal stockpile levels and offers energy traders the only timely signal of this all-important market indicator.
