Weekly Coal Stock Pile Report Methodology (US)
The Genscape Coal Stock Report relies on data published in the Coal Burn Report and the Coal Transport Report to estimate weekly changes in coal stockpiles. Genscape also publishes coal stock change estimates for selected plants. The coal stock change is the difference between deliveries of coal to a region and the coal burn observed in that region. Coal deliveries to a region are calculated using a scaling factor to reflect the modes of transport not covered in the Coal Transport Report. The scaling is based on the share of deliveries by delivery mode as reported by the EIA and is adjusted further using comparisons to published rail transport and stockpile data. The coal burn estimates by region are published in the Coal Burn Report. For a detailed description of the methodology, please see that report or http://www.genscape.com/na/data_us_wklycoalmethod.shtml. The absolute coal stock numbers are based on the December 2004 published EIA numbers by region plus the cumulative weekly changes described above. Plants are selected for inclusion in the stock change list based on the congruence of Genscape’s delivery and burn data with the data from form 423 published by EIA and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for deliveries and the data from EIA form 906 for the burn.
