Frequency Event Add On
Subscribers can now learn in real-time about Frequency disturbances caused by generating units tripping offline unexpectedly.
The grid frequency in each part of the U.S. sub-grids (Eastern, Western, and Texas interconnections) is carefully controlled to maintain a normal frequency of 60 Hertz (Hz). Deviations in this frequency indicate an imbalance in the grid between the supply and demand (load) for power. A change in frequency can be a key indicator of a major grid event e.g. the unexpected loss of a generating unit. With Genscape's real-time Frequency Event monitoring system, users will be notified of such events. The event window contains a color shaded map indicating the event location, time, and the size of the event (megawatts of generation lost).
Subscribers can now:
- See a visual indication of where a generator has tripped offline
- Hear an audio alert indicating an event has happened
- Get an estimate of the number of megawatts that has come offline and the approximate time of the event
- See historical frequency event data provided by Genscape
Genscape's frequency event monitoring system encompasses all US power plants that have at least one 300MW generator and above. It also will report the same type of event in the Canadian provinces of Ontario, New Brunswick, Columbia, and Alberta. However, frequency disturbances in Quebec will not be reported. The system is designed to detect and report generation loss events only. It does not report all frequency deviations. For example, it does not report loss of load to the power grid. In the event of a blackout, Genscape may use information from the monitoring system to provide additional information to clients.
