Louisville, KY, April 15, 2008 -Marathon’s fluid catalytic cracking unit, which makes gasoline, seems to be ramping back on line at the 222,000 barrel per day Catlettsburg refinery in Kentucky. The 102,000 barrel per day unit was taken off line after a fire at a substation.
At the time the unit was taken off line on April 10, Genscape monitors detected a decrease in the power flow to the refinery. At 07:30 am EDT on Tuesday, April 15, the monitors are detecting a return to the pre-accident level of power flow. This is consistent with an attempt to restart the unit in question.
Genscape uses proprietary technology to remotely sense power flow on transmission lines in the United States and Europe. Genscape has approximately 3,000 monitors currently deployed worldwide. The data derived from the measurements is used by over 80% of the major energy traders in the markets Genscape also serves corporate planners, risk managers, energy analysts, and regulators tracking power generation, fuel consumption and emissions at power plants.
Genscape recently started monitoring refineries and is using the data to provide an early alert of changes in oil refinery operations. Genscape currently monitors major oil-fired power plants in the U.S. and Europe and provides that information to both power and oil trading subscribers.
“Our technology has added a lot of transparency and efficiency to the power markets. With the success in detecting refinery operational changes, we hope to be able to bring the same advantages to the refining sector,” said Sean O’Leary, Genscape’s chief executive officer.
