Hurricane Sandy New York Afternoon Update Oct. 31 3:00PM

Hurricane Sandy Update

Power being slowly restored in New York, some generation as well- Overnight a significant number of customers were restored to service in New York across all service areas. Twice as many customers have gotten power back in Long Island relative the city (see 1st table below), and actual usage (2nd table below) also indicates that power in LIPA is being restored at twice the rate. All of the major underwater cables that import power into these two areas remain offline, but some generation has been restored (3rd table). Those are two plants are running again at a partial level, but the two nuclear plants forced offline remain down.

As a result of those ongoing outages, the New York ISO has continued to ask numerous plants to remain on in order to protect system reliability. Genscape’s proprietary monitors indicate (image below) the Astoria Gas Turbines (fast start units that typically remain on for short periods) have been running constantly since 6pm Monday. As service is slowly restored we expect these units will need to continue to run until the damaged generation and transmission equipment can at least be partially repaired.
